You've been lured by
the beautiful scenery, interesting history, and exciting recreation
opportunities that await visitors to Grand Island. So, now its time
to plan your visit!
Summer
visitors may travel to the island via passenger ferry or private
watercraft. The passenger ferry departs the mainland from a landing
known as Powell Point. Refer to the ferry
schedule for information, times and rates.
If considering travel by private watercraft to Grand Island,
please consult the Visitor Information Center in Munising. Please
note that personal watercraft (jet skis) are not allowed to land
on Grand Island and that docks at Powell Point (mainland) and Williams
Landing (Grand Island) are available for loading and unloading only.
On the island, visitors get around by foot, mountain
bike, or guided motorized tour. Experienced adventurers may explore
on their own, while the motorized tour provides a guided visit to
historic and scenic sites on the south end.
Those camping on the island can reach campsites by foot, bicycle or tour bus.
The Island is a primitive place with minimal visitor amenities. Other than vault toilets, day-use areas, designated campsites and trails, few recreation facilities are present.
Always
obtain a marine weather forecast before venturing onto Lake Superior.
Going into the backwoods? Remember to leave your itinerary with
someone and to bring safety and first aid equipment. In case of
an emergency, a restricted toll public telephone is located at Williams
Landing Visitor Station.
Bug spray, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and hat or scarf.
Water; also water filter for extended visits.
Rain gear
State fish, game and boating licenses as needed
Snacks or meals (no concessions available on island.)
Tools and extra tube for mountain bikers.
